Pin-FAIL & Cake Toppers

{Written by: The Mama}

Okay, I’m admitting my first Pinterest fail and I’m sharing it with you. Our youngest, Molly, turned one two weeks ago. I had envisioned creating an adorable three layer 4″ round cake. Something like this….

I came so close to accompishing this. I made the batter and divided into different bowls coloring each a different fun neon color. I had a lot of batter left over and even thought, hey, why not try a cake round of “tie dye” too?

Everything would have been perfect….Buuuut, I got a little overzealous with the greasing of the cake pans. I didn’t want anything to stick and sprayed them with Pam Baking Nonstick Spray. Then some other little light bulb went off in my head and I floured the pans after that. Apparently, this is a bad combo. When the cakes came out of the oven they had this nasty brown crust on the outside. I tried slicing it off but quickly my 4″ rounds became 2″ and when I attempted layering, they became the leaning tower of sad cake.  I was left with the single 8″ tie dye round. I managed to slice off the nasty brown bits and piped a quick “Happy 1st Birthday Molly” on it. As disappointed as I was about this, it actually turned out to fit the birthday perfectly. This was Molly’s smash cake, and with minimal frosting it kept the mess down, well a little anyway.

The rest of the party received cupcakes. You can see, Taylor was enjoying the frosting.

The Mrs. created the cutest cupcake toppers for me. Simple washi tape and toothpicks. I loved them. She also made an adorable “Molly” banner/bunting and “1st” cake topper. So adorable, they were saved and are going in the baby book.

Have you had any pinterest fails you care to share?

  1. I love your honesty! The occasional fail makes a great story, which hopefully helps with the initial disappointment. At least your little one had fun with it in the end, so your efforts were not wasted 🙂

  2. Stopping by from Crazy Beautiful Life blog hop party…cakes are hard to make!! My baby turned one in October and I spent an hour trying to perfect the color of the icing and luckily his round cakes turned out fine which I was suprised about!! I usually end up destroying a simple cake some how or another! The tie dye cake is super cute!!

    • It’s funny how we can get so consumed with making pretty cakes for our babies that could really care less. But, hey, I guess that’s what’s so fun about being mom 😉
      Thanks for stopping by and boosting my cake confidence.

Your two cents....
